Workshop will provide key critical elements to business success in the landscape industry today, including:
• Understanding the Business Life Cycle
• Start Clean Finish Clean, the key to business process
• DiSC, using personality profiles to foster stronger communication
• Lean applications in landscape production

TPIE Road Shows: Pest Management Workshop

Pest Management: From an update on the latest pest impacting the Interiorscape Industry to Florida's top landscape pests finding their way indoors along with what is happening on the home front to the control the populations of Aedes mosquitoes known to vector the Zika virus, this workshop will give attendees a comprehensive look at how to manage the pest in the interior environment. Session presenters:

Suzanne Wainwright-Evans is an Ornamental Entomologist specializing in integrated pest management. Suzanne has been involved in the Green Industry for more than 18 years with a primary focus on biological control and using pesticides properly. She is a graduate of the University of Florida with degrees in both Entomology and Environmental Horticulture. She has worked throughout the United States and internationally consulting to greenhouses, nurseries, landscapers and interiorscape companies.

Catharine Mannion is a Professor and Extension Specialist with the University of Florida, Tropical Research and Education Center. She has been with the University of Florida for 15 years. She is responsible for developing a research and extension program on integrated pest management of ornamental plants with an emphasis on invasive pests. Her research has focused on the biology and management of several introduced pests such as whiteflies, scales, thrips and weevils. She received a B.S. degree in Biological Sciences from University of California, a M.S. degree in Entomology from North Carolina State University, and a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Florida.

Frank Fornari has been involved in the horticultural industry for 30+ years. Over the last decade Frank has worked at Valent and BASF helping growers manage insect, weed and disease issues. Frank has also participated in the introduction of many new products into the market including Safari Insecticide, Pageant Intrinsic Fungicide and Sultan Miticide. As Clarke’s Regional Manager for the Southern US Frank is leading a team working with government agencies at the local, State and Federal levels to manage the mosquitoes that vector diseases such as Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, West Nile and Zika.

Put on your walking shoes for a Tuesday afternoon adventure. From a beautiful variety of Bromeliads to a wide array of tropical foliage, attendees will take a tour through three production facilities in Homestead, FL. The three stops included in Tuesday afternoon’s tour are:

Bullis Bromeliads has been a family owned and operated nursery since 1977. Bullis Bromeliads resides and continues to grow on over 25 acres of land with over 18 acres of shade houses and 2.5 acres of greenhouses. Founded by the late Harvey R. Bullis II, Harvey III and Patricia Bullis now run this wholesale company with their two sons, nephews Rick and Thomas G., and brother Eugenio. Now, the 4th generation, Harvey IV and Thomas Bullis, have joined the company for growing and hybridization. Family traditions still run strong in the business.

Island Tropical Foliage is a 30-acre nursery owned and operated by Larry Barr, located in Homestead, Florida. Rae was inducted into AIFD in 2001 and is now the past president of North Central AIFD.
