TPIE Road Shows: Trends & Garden Center Design Workshop

TPIE Road Shows: Pest Management Workshop

Pest Management: From an update on the latest pest impacting the Interiorscape Industry to Florida's top landscape pests finding their way indoors along with what is happening on the home front to the control the populations of Aedes mosquitoes known to vector the Zika virus, this workshop will give attendees a comprehensive look at how to manage the pest in the interior environment. Session presenters:

Suzanne Wainwright-Evans is an Ornamental Entomologist specializing in integrated pest management. Suzanne has been involved in the Green Industry for more than 18 years with a primary focus on biological control and using pesticides properly. She is a graduate of the University of Florida with degrees in both Entomology and Environmental Horticulture. She has worked throughout the United States and internationally consulting to greenhouses, nurseries, landscapers and interiorscape companies.

Catharine Mannion is a Professor and Extension Specialist with the University of Florida, Tropical Research and Education Center. She has been with the University of Florida for 15 years. She is responsible for developing a research and extension program on integrated pest management of ornamental plants with an emphasis on invasive pests. Her research has focused on the biology and management of several introduced pests such as whiteflies, scales, thrips and weevils. She received a B.S. degree in Biological Sciences from University of California, a M.S. degree in Entomology from North Carolina State University, and a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Florida.

Frank Fornari has been involved in the horticultural industry for 30+ years. Over the last decade Frank has worked at Valent and BASF helping growers manage insect, weed and disease issues. Frank has also participated in the introduction of many new products into the market including Safari Insecticide, Pageant Intrinsic Fungicide and Sultan Miticide. As Clarke’s Regional Manager for the Southern US Frank is leading a team working with government agencies at the local, State and Federal levels to manage the mosquitoes that vector diseases such as Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, West Nile and Zika.

The Perez Art Musuem is a modern and contemporary art museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries, located in Downtown Miami and home to Patrick Blanc’s creations. The tour will provide insight into the installation and maintenance of the hanging planters.

Other green wall systems and projects will be part of this tour as well.

TPIE Road Shows: Production Tour

Put on your walking shoes for a Tuesday afternoon adventure. From a beautiful variety of Bromeliads to a wide array of tropical foliage, attendees will take a tour through three production facilities in Homestead, FL. The three stops included in Tuesday afternoon’s tour are:

Bullis Bromeliads has been a family owned and operated nursery since 1977. Bullis Bromeliads resides and continues to grow on over 25 acres of land with over 18 acres of shade houses and 2.5 acres of greenhouses. Founded by the late Harvey R. Bullis II, Harvey III and Patricia Bullis now run this wholesale company with their two sons, nephews Rick and Thomas G., and brother Eugenio. Now, the 4th generation, Harvey IV and Thomas Bullis, have joined the company for growing and hybridization. Family traditions still run strong in the business.

Island Tropical Foliage is a 30-acre nursery owned and operated by Larry Barr, located in Homestead, Florida. Island Tropical Foliage has a wide variety of customers in the U.S. and Caribbean and provides wholesale plants, trees, and nursery supplies to retail garden centers, landscapers and landscape architects, home builders, commercial and residential builders, developers, hotels and resorts, and plant brokers. They pride themselves on a nursery built for high quality and excellent customer service.

Costa Farms is a third-generation family-owned grower that operates on more than 2,000 acres in Florida (with additional farms in North Carolina, South Carolina, and the Dominican Republic). The company’s diverse team offers a wealth of solutions for retail customers of all levels, including bringing new varieties to market via its research and development wing and consumer-oriented branding programs via its marketing department. Get a unique view of Costa Farms with this tour, which starts by highlighting the company’s full range of product offerings (including indoor foliage, bonsai, orchids, outdoor tropicals), then moves to the field so you can see how the company grows its product.

Jenny Thomasson AIFD, CFD, opened her floral retail shop 12 years ago and hasn't looked back! With a degree in graphic design, she has a savory flair and looks to make very unique arrangements for her clients. She earned her first certification of CFD from the American Institute of Floral Designers in 2010, and in 2011, earned the distinguished certification of AIFD from the American Institute of Floral Designers. She's presented at the AIFD Symposium, which is quite an honor and has earned two more very distinct certifications: from PFCI, Professional Floral Commentators International and the EMC, European Masters Certification.

She has held many national positions with the American Institute of Flora Designers (AIFD), serving as a designer for the Philadelphia Flower Show and was invited to design floral arrangements at the White House.

Gaby Ramos, Milam’s Markets and Rae Roberts AIFD. Gaby Ramos serves as floral director at Milam's Markets in Miami. Her first-hand experience in the supermarket industry includes everything from planning and buying to merchandising for special events and holidays. Having owned a retail florist store for 20 years, Rae now teaches floral design classes through the Illinois State Florist Associations (ISFA). Rae was inducted into AIFD in 2001 and is now the past president of North Central AIFD. She is a longstanding member of the Illinois State Florists Association serving as board member, Vice President and President in 2010-2012. In 2001 Rae chosen as ISFA's designer of the year; in 2004 as Ohio Designer of the Year and in 2012 as Tennessee Designer of the Year 2012, Rae's passion is to educate florists and to encourage expertise, professionalism and knowledge in the floral design industry.
